Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 in the home of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Roberts belongs to the fourth generation of Robertses that reside in the Atlanta area beginning with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. The Robertses' father was interested in theatre from an early time. As an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed in a variety of productions in Atlanta. After joining the airforce, in 1953 he appeared in an air force production in Biloxi with Betty Lou Bredemus. In 1955, the couple got married and in 1956 their son Eric Anthony was born. Walter and his wife left their Air Force service in after which they began enrolment with Walter in Tulane University. Walter was hired as a technician by Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio to assist on the stage of the show Bum Bum and His Buddies, which aired in Decatur Georgia. Walter along with Betty Lou produced a Saturday morning local television show that was aimed at children, named Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964. This was a project that they funded themselves. In the following year, they established the Actors and Writers Workshop which was in operation for a period of six years. The couple had another two children: Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also named Lisa), and Julia Billingsley (1967) (also known by the name Julie).
